The RCPE is an independent standard-setting body and professional membership organisation which aims to improve and maintain the quality of patient care.  The RCPE has a strong UK and international presence with over 12,000 Fellows and Members in 91 countries, covering 56 medical specialties and interests.

Of the fellowship, Professor Watson said: "It is an honour to be recognised in this way and by such a prestigious body.  At first, as I am not a medical doctor, I thought that the invitation to become a Fellow must be a mistake, but the RCPE have non-physician fellows.  I see this as an opportunity to represent the voice of nursing and to make a contribution to medical education and patient care through the work of the RCPE."

Professor Watson already holds several fellowships including of the Royal College of Nursing of the United Kingdom and the Society of Biology.  He was among the first group of three non-USA nurses to be elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.  The Faculty of Health and Social Care has one other Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, Professor Mark Hayter.
